Community-driven change: Youthmakers Hub in Turkana with the 3is project

From May 20 to 23, 2025, Youthmakers Hub participated in a transformative visit to Turkana, Kenya, as part of the 3is project. Hosted by our partners from Turkana University College, the sessions and collaborative discussions on “Community and Industry Embedding” highlighted the effectiveness of community-based approaches in higher education and the importance of incorporating local realities into academic missions.

Throughout the visit, we witnessed how universities in remote and marginalized areas are innovating to meet community needs and build meaningful partnerships with local stakeholders. Engaging with regional institutions, such as Learning Lions, showcased how digital skills and entrepreneurship can be nurtured within communities without requiring youth to migrate for opportunities. The commitment of Turkana University College and the Turkana Basin Institute to fostering inclusive, locally relevant higher education resonates with Youthmakers Hub’s mission to champion inclusive growth and empower young people to thrive in their communities.

Our belief that the most sustainable and impactful solutions emerge from within communities themselves is stronger than ever. As we return from Turkana and from this life-changing experience, collaborating with local institutions and partners to unlock the potential of inclusive education and youth-led innovation is on the top of our priorities.
