Impactful, Inclusive, Integrated Higher Education in Eastern Africa (3is)

3is aims to revolutionize Higher Education Institutions in remote Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya regions. This innovative capacity-building project empowers participating African universities to design impactful policy instruments and action plans. Focused on internationalization, inclusiveness, educational innovations, academic excellence, community and industry outreach, and regional integration, the project is developed with local partners representing diverse stakeholders. Through these, universities can elevate their standards by enhancing staff competence, forging stronger ties with the private sector and local communities, and bolstering international engagement.

The activities under this programme are:

The Kickoff Meeting of 3is: Impactful, Inclusive, Integrated Higher Education in Eastern Africa took place in Nairobi, Kenya on March 7th and 8th with partners from Spain, Greece, Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. During the meeting, all the presentations and discussions were focused on implementing the project’s goals of internationalization, inclusivity, innovation, academic excellence, community engagement, industry involvement, and regional integration. The event showcased the power of collective action in fostering positive change and set the stage for partners to share their visions, strategies, and expertise to drive the project’s success.

On May 21st and 22nd, 2024, the 3is Workshop on Internationalization of Higher Education was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, promoting collaboration and community among participants. Discussions covered the framework for internationalizing higher education, guidelines for self-assessment, and planning future actions. Participants explored internationalization through teaching mobilities, curriculum design, research practices, community and industry engagement, and institutional engagement. The workshop concluded with reflections and suggestions for the next steps, facilitating the exchange of insights and developing strategies to reshape higher education in Eastern Africa.

On May 21st and 22nd, 2024, the 3is Workshop on Inclusiveness of Higher Education occurred in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, characterized by reflective discussions and cooperative endeavors. Participants engaged in sessions on the framework for higher education inclusiveness, guidelines for self-assessment, and planning future actions. They discussed inclusiveness in curriculum design, pedagogy, research, and management and addressed the inclusion of disability, gender, ethnicity, religion, technology, and health. Further discussions explored barriers and supportive practices in schools and universities, transitions to employment for graduates with disabilities, and inclusive strategies used by universities. The workshop concluded with brainstorming sessions and planning actions for enhancing inclusiveness, along with final reflections and suggestions for the next steps. The event served as a platform for active involvement and joint efforts, making it a remarkable and inclusive experience.

From November 20 to 23, 2024, the “Learning and Teaching Innovations in Higher Education” workshop took place at the University of Girona (UdG). It was an inspiring event bringing together educators and academic leaders to explore transformative teaching practices. Through sessions on modern methodologies, innovative assessments, digital communication and experiential learning techniques, the workshop fostered collaboration and cultural exchange. This enriching experience strengthened our commitment to advancing inclusivity, cultural exchange, and positive change in education.
